live, this is kron 4 news at 11:00. a deadly tragedy for the san francisco fire department. something wendt wrong today. one firefighter last his life and another is batology stay alive. we have team coverage tonight, including reaction from the fire department and why the scene of the fire is now being treated as a crime scene. here is the photo of the firefighter killed. vincent perez died after being injured in the fire. a 21 year veteran of the san

francisco fire department. another firefighter remains hospitalized. eyewitness news magazine grat l joins us -- grant lodes joins us live. >> reporter: one firefighter passed away. the other firefighter remains in critical condition. had emergency surgery and a third firefighter has been released after suffering less serious injuries and now tonight a fire department mourns the loss of vincent perez. died trying to serve the city he loved. >> reporter: san francisco's firefighters lost one of their best, third. vincent perez died while fighting this fire. >> tough day in san francisco. this is one thing i was hoping not to ever have to report.

thank you. fire department is like a family. >> reporter: firefighters tell us he and another firefighter took the brunt of a flash or flashover. >> everything ignites at once. with that comes a blast of heat, comes -- you can hear it, you can see it. you can feel it. comes energy with that. so like a -- sort of an explosion. >> two of our members were found down on the ground and they were pulled out and transported to the hospital. >> difficult for me to report one fatality. one of our members succumbed to his injuries after he was transported here, after going into full cardiac arrest. one firefighter is fighting for his life. >> reporter: vincent perez was with anthony valerio when the

flash occurred. anthony valerio underwent surgery and remains in critical condition. >> reporter: back now live, the scene has calmed down but all night police officers, firefighters have been coming up asking do you know how the one individual is doing who remains in critical condition. you can feel the community coming together in this situation. it's been about eight years since a firefighter lost his life while battling a fire but that doesn't ease the pain. for now live, grant lodes, kron 4 news. >> this is what he had to say about his last friend and colleague. >> i worked with him for 10 years every day. he taught me how to fight fires. last fire we went to he stole

the hose. if you went to a fire with him, you trusted him. you would be okay. tough, big lost. everyone knew him as a firefighter, friend, we are a family. feels like i lost my family. some people had to finish working the rest of the night and they will be on edge. have to come in tomorrow and work again. you don't get a day off. it's the extra challenge, you have a loss and you can't take a day off. >> our team coverage continues with nicole shanafelt, who is live outside of the scene. >> reporter: yes, it has been a very emotional night for neighbors around here. while many firefighters left the scene, you can see that one fire engine till remains here. they are waiting on stand by to clean the scene up but that won't happen till the investigation is over with, that is investigation is expected to last all night

long. >> as we were watching, all the neighbors were piling out. we saw a lot of yelling. two firefighters were in the garage, next to the car, they were working on them. >> reporter: she lives two doors down from this home. she saw white smoke that turned to black smoke. then she and others learned three firefighters were hurt battling the fire inside this home on berkeley way. two firefighters suffered severe injuries. all three firefighters were rushed to the hospital where one, vincent perez died from his injuries. neighbors were devastated to hear the news. >> we have a fire house right here, they are extremely responsive. we get to know them and care about them. it's a sad thing when somebody is doing their job, trying to save life and property and they

cast in a bit. the couple who kidnapped and raped jaycee dugard were handed their sentenced today. phillip garrido was sentenced to life in prison and nancy garrido 36 years in live. no words were spoken by the couple. the judge referred to him as evil. also there today, another woman abducted by phillip garrido who said she felt she had to be there today. >> it was good for me. helped me heal. watch. i did what i came here to do. watch this case and watch him get sentenced. i hope he rots in hell. >> terisa estacio reports how jaycee dugard and her mother lashed out. >> reporter: she began by

saying, i refuse to waste another second of my life in your presence. what you and nancy did was reprehensible. save your apologies and empty words. for the crimes you have committed i hope you have as many sleepless nights as i did. she spoke of the anguish she suffered after jaycee dugard disappearances. she said i am nauseous that thought of a exploitation and the abuse you endured at your hands. adding that you don't deserve to live or lie or exist. you are selfish, self serving, monsters. she mentioned her grand daughters saying, her daughters know what you did to their mother. they realize your backyard was a prison and understand your

fighty despicable secret. they are aware that they have been deceived and i am here to tell you there is no love losed. terisa estacio, kron 4 news. >> she was snatched a few hundred yards from the home. the judge unsealed some of the testimony, describing how she was tasers. she said his hands shoots out of the window and i feel the shock. she says she does not remember the car pulling away because she blocked out or something. the person who grabbed her moved to the front seat. i heard voices in the front and the man said he can't believe he got away with it and started laughing. a week since a nursing student disappeared. police investigators are tracking down michelle le's

new at 11:00. a former leader who spent 30 years in prison for a crime he says he didn't commit died. at the age of 63 he was convicted of 1972 of shooting a school teacher near los angeles. he always maintained his innocence. now a look at other big stories around the bay covered by our kron 4 news crews. >> reporter: here in san jose worries growing amid loves in the police department. negotiations have broken down over the city's bid to save money by cutting pension benefit. 278 officers could be layed off as soon as next month. coming at a hame when homicide are double what they were a year ago.

in san jose, rob fladeboe, kron 4 news. investigators that police department handling the michelle le missing person's case say they have several persons of interest that they would like to interview. earlier in the week a friend of lee's was arrested and brought here to the police department but released. investigators say there are several more persons that they would like to bring in and ask them where they were the night michelle le disappear. haaziq madyun, kron 4 news. >> reporter: a week since michelle le was last seen taking a brake from kaiser permanente hospital. the center is a few blocks away from this neighborhood where her car was found. friends and relatives are hoping for their safe return. rain back in the forecast

tomorrow. starting in the afternoon. showers move into the north bay. by the evening, widespread rain. 9:00, light showers bay area wide. heavier rain during the middle of the night. saturday morning, the yellow indicating moderate rain showers continuing to the north bay. we will see more heavy rain through the evening. the rain will be steady throughout the day on saturday. lull in the rain sunday morning but it picks back up. sunday looks drier but a few areas of moderate rainfall. look at rainfall totals. this is incredible. it is june. 2 inches of rain in the north bay. 2.5 in the santa cruz mountains. this is through the weekend. friday through sunday could see up to an inch of rain. temperatures running below average for this time of year.
